Family-Run Since Day One
About Us
We're not just a hunting lodge — we're a South Dakota family that loves sharing our passion for the sport.
Our Story
A Family Tradition in the Heart of South Dakota
Half Cocked Lodge was born out of a love for the land, the hunt, and the people who share it. What began as a family tradition on our South Dakota property has grown into one of the region's most sought-after pheasant hunting destinations.
We believe a great hunt is about more than birds in the bag — it's about the camaraderie around the table, the stories shared over a home-cooked meal, and the friendships that last a lifetime. That's the experience we work hard to deliver for every group that walks through our doors.
With a thousand acres of prime pheasant habitat and hundreds of acres of food plots to ensure habitat for wildlife remains healthy throughout the winter, experienced guides, and well-trained dogs, we work hard to ensure every hunt is both memorable and successful. From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave with your birds cleaned and packaged, every detail is handled with care and genuine South Dakota hospitality.
As a family-run operation, we take immense pride in treating every guest like one of our own. Our lodge was proudly featured on the Outdoor Channel's "The Flush" and "American Heroes Outdoors," but what matters most to us isn't the spotlight — it's seeing familiar faces return year after year. Many of our guests become friends, and many of our friends become part of the Half Cocked Lodge tradition.

Northern SD Pheasants Forever
Conservationist of the Year
Dave's father and grandfather started the family farm in the 1930s. Through times, good and bad, they persevered and eventually expanded the family farm. Currently the farm is nearly 1,000 acres — with an amazing 60% of that land dedicated to wildlife habitat on an annual basis. In 2007, Dave purchased an additional 320 acres of farmland and converted it from pasture, growing the pheasant population on that land from a mere dozen birds to 200 or more pheasants today. He continually strives to strike a delicate balance between profits, farming, and land dedicated to wildlife — a commitment spanning over two decades.
"Gratitude fills our hearts for the place we call home and the resources bestowed upon us. Dixie and I share a passion for wildlife, finding greater joy in observing animals than in hunting them. Many of us harbor dreams of setting aside land for wildlife — whether it's a cattail slough, grassy area, CRP, or a grove of trees. The challenge lies in providing birds with a refuge during harsh winters and a safe nesting place. Our lodge and farm have become a cherished destination for many. Guests return year after year, and over time, they cease to be mere visitors — they become family."
As stewards of the land, Dave honors his legacy and strives to leave a lasting impact for generations to come.
